Parkinson’s disease is characterized by a progressive and selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia nigra. Recent studies indicate that 5-S-cysteinyldopamine (CysDA) is strongly neurotoxic and may contribute to the onset and progression of this disease. The aim of the present work is to study the effect exerted by CysDA on the expression, aggregation and cellular localization of alpha-Synuclein (a-Syn), involved in the etiopathogenesis of PD, and of ERp57, an endoplasmic reticulum thiol oxidoreductase, known to be implicated in neurodegeneration.
