Abstract

This essay will be polarized mainly on those authors and ways hidden in the background, those half-forgotten artists who tried to conjugate the innovative ideas coming from modernity and the avant-garde by paying attention to the tradition’s past (recent and remote). Therefore they are called the “marginal avant-garde”, a definition that emphasizes the experimental character of their work, but also the eccentricity of their artistic ways. In particular we analyze the international artistic colony living on Capri and Amalfi Gulf at the beginning of 20th century. Gilbert Clavel, whose name don’t appear in any history of German literature, has had a very important function in the “Capri’s Futurism” for his relationship with Depero and Tavolato, for his “oneiric novels” and above all for the restructuring of a Norman tower in Positano, that he considered his “total work of art”. Clavel’s work is a paradigmatic example of the issue of artists of this time who are looking for a "elsewhere" as an ideal place for the production and it help us - according to the lesson of Walter Benjamin - to understand the epoch through the artistic way of the “marginal” authors.
