Recent attempts to classify the Coleoidea and interpret their evolution are critically reviewed, pointing out some controversial aspects in nomenclature, systematics and phylogeny. The classification of the order Aulacocerida is discussed and a provisional suprageneric classification is proposed, pointing out outstanding questions deserving further research.
