A combined subaerial and submarine study of the Scilla-Palmi coastal sector (Calabria, Southern Italy) has been carried out in the frame of the most financed among the Italian PRIN projects (National Interest Rerserach Projects), with the aim to assess risks related to coastal landslides. The 1783 Scilla rock avalanche is the most catastrophic event historically recorded in this area. A detailed investigation and back analysis of this landslide have been performed, which represent a reference case study for the overall project. Geological factors predisposing to the landslide occurrence have been recognized and good numerical simulations of the landslide failure, propagation and consequences (tsunami) have been used as additional investigation tools.
