The essay focuses on the eight Byzantine bronze doors brought to Italy from Costantinople between 1060 and 1110. Those ones are examined from the historical point of view, regarding the patrons who commissioned them, their epigraphs (the “signatures” by the artists) and their technique. Since the metals inlaid technique these bronze artefacts are made through was already used in Byzantium for figured doors in the late 9th century – as confirmed by an illumination of ms. Par. gr. 510 – it can be demonstrated it was not a novelty of the Comnenian age.

Abstract

The essay focuses on the eight Byzantine bronze doors brought to Italy from Costantinople between 1060 and 1110. Those ones are examined from the historical point of view, regarding the patrons who commissioned them, their epigraphs (the “signatures” by the artists) and their technique.
