Abstract

There has been considerable interest in the predictive value of insomnia with respect to Depression and Anxiety disorders. The aim of the present study is to Evaluate the relationships between stressful events, insomnia, depression and anxiety through a short term (6 months) perspective study in a non clinical sample 961 participants 20-60 years old took part in the study and answered the The Life Stress Events; The Adult Self-Report Scale for Anxiety (ANX) and Depression (DEP), The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI; Morin 1993); The Sleep Disorder Questionnaire. Structural Equations Models were used to test the hypotheses. Results indicated that Insomnia can be both a predictor/mediator of the relationship between stressful life events and depression, and a consequence of depression. With respect to anxiety insomnia seems to be only a predictor/mediator. The same paths were evidences across gender. Insomnia appears to be a better predictor of mental distress than the reverse
