Abstract

Passive attitude stabilization techniques, while not sufficient to satisfy all requirements, are worth to be considered in every mission design since, at least, they are able to reduce the amount of active control needed. The paper considers the gravity gradient stabilization and, standing its lack of control about yaw axis, deals with its augmentation by means of adjusting solar reflecting/absorbing surfaces. The analysis is carried on for Martian cases, where this kind of mission has a remarkable interest. Control by modifying optical properties of the surfaces, other than moving them, is considered, and possible use of liquid crystal screens is suggested.
