The paper provides an evaluation of the electromagnetic environmental impact reduction that can be achieved in a GSM cell replacing the traditional sector antenna with a smart antenna. In fact, smart antenna technology avoids broadcasting the electromagnetic field all over the coverage area, directing it towards the user to be served. A switched-beam smart antenna has been designed and used, in conjunction with statistical coverage prediction and mobile traffic models, to evaluate average field levels in some sample points within the cell. The obtained results show that, during busy hours, the considered smart antenna can yield a reduction of power density levels, as compared to a traditional antenna, ranging from 17% to 22%, in the case of a 4-carrier BTS, and from 26% to 31%, in the case of a 6-carrier BTS.
