Objective: Applying the TAS-20 for alexithymia to adolescents and analyzing the associations with psychological distress, eating behavior, and styles of attachment. Method: TAS-20 was administered to 360 secondary school students. SCL-90 (for psychological distress), EAT (for eating disorders) and ASQ (for attachment styles) were administered to 160 students of the total sample. Results: Explorative factor analysis showed that two of the three factors of the TAS-20 (Difficulty Identifying and Describing Feelings) were stable. The third factor, however, was unstable and was divided into two further factors, “Difficulty being in Touch and Using Feelings” and “Externally Oriented Thinking.” The four factors explain the 44,5% of the total variance. The TAS-20 showed significant correlations with psychological symptoms (SCL-90), eating disorders (EAT), and insecure attachment (ASQ). Conclusions: The factor structure of the TAS-20 was partially replicable on adolescents. Consistently with findings on adults, alexithymia was associated with psychological and behavioral problems as well as with insecure attachment. Further studies are needed to investigate whether alexithymic features in adolescence might be predictors of clinical disorders in adulthood
