We established an experimental plot study of extensive Mediterranean grasslands along an altitudinal gradient (from 642 to 1719 m asl) in Central Spain (4 sites). At each site, two slop position (upper and lower) and two treatments (grazed and fenced) were studied. Soil sampling was carried out to obtain saprotrophic soil fungi composition data. 51 morphological and functional traits (MFTs) were considered to describe species diversity and MFT diversity patterns. There was a clear trend of increasing species diversity related to higher soil carbon storage. This trend was also detected after herbivore exclusion, which allowed to an increase in aboveground carbon storage as litter. Reduction in fungal specialization was showed as soil carbon storage increase with altitude.
