Material flows to be recycled are increasing in quantity and typologies both for the environmental sensibility of communities and for the European legislation demands. It is therefore necessary to adopt efficient technologies in order to enhance material recovery and reduce energy consumption. In recycling processes, comminution is a fundamental step that allows material liberation but, at the same time, is highly energy consuming. In order to assess the effectiveness of comminution processes, tests based on image analysis procedure have been conducted on the products coming from traditional and low-temperature comminution (cryo-comminution) processes carried out on waste materials. Low temperature has been attained either for the material to be comminuted or for the comminution chamber. As refrigerants agents, carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen have been adopted. Waste materials submitted to the cryocomminution processes were electric cables, pharmaceutical blisters and multilayered food packaging. Images of samples of the particles coming from the different comminution processes have been acquired by optical microscope and processed through the software Image-pro Plus®. For each comminuted particle, several morphological and morphometrical parameters have been calculated. The results of the image analysis procedure have allowed to highlight a correlation among some morphological and morphometrical parameters and the comminution effectiveness.
