“Synthetic method” has recently been suggested by some criticisms of so-called “classic” Cognitive Science as a methodology that uses robots as models of fairly complex behaviours of organisms. In this paper I shall briefly discuss two points. First, the synthetic or modelling method has an its own history, and its “discovery” goes back to the early twentieth century. Second, Cognitive Science inherited synthetic method from Cybernetics and early AI, and it is currently shared by both classic and new trends in contemporary Cognitive Science. Certain actual differences in the use of such a method are pointed out.
