Our research was focused to the evaluation of the activity of usnic acid, a secondary lichen metabolite, in the inhibition of biofilm formation. Particularly, a newly synthesized basic polyurethane was iloaded, both in the bulk and in the surface, with usnic acid. Then, round shaped discs of usnic acid loaded polymer was put into a flowcell, suitable for biofilm growth and observation by confocal microscopy. Results showed that only this polymer loaded with usnic acid was able to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation. In addition, although the usnic acid allowed biofilm formation by the gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, it was able to affect the morphology of the formed biofilm indicating the possible interference of this drug with cell-cell communication pathways.
