Abstract

During the Holocene, water and food resources dramatically varied. Unpredictable and abrupt climatic fluctuations forced human groups to rely for their food security on livestock and wild plants. The Wadi Tanezzuft, located in south-western Fezzan, between the Acacus and the Tassili mountains, was still active hydrogically after the decisive acidification of the Sahara, some 500 years BP,creating a large oasis,c. 80 km long, which attracted peoples from surrounding areas. Here, overexploitation of the environment, depletion of resources, and increasing competition led to deep social and cultural transformations. Settlement systems, rock art,and especially funerary 'megalithic' architecture indicate an increasing sedentism and social hierarchy, with the emergence of complex societies, which led, some centuries later to the onset of an early set.
