Object of the present study are the “Variations” of Zabolockij’s poems Stolbcy. The collection Stolbcy includes 22 poems and was published in 1929. Right from 1933, Zabolockij began to re-elaborate his poems and continued in the following years, as can be seen in the proofs preserved in the Leningrad Archives. Therefore we have “Variations” of Stolbcy of 1948, 1952 and 1956-57, which belong to the poet’s family, and were kindly shown to me. We cannot think that these “Variations” are due only to the difficulties in Zabolockij’s life (he was arrested in 1938, mainly because of Stolbcy, released in 1944, but couldn’t go back to Moscow until 1948), but they are also due to his tendency to bring his poems to perfection. That’s one of Zabolockij’s typical traits, he worked all his life not only on Stolbcy but also on the other poems and even on the Slovo o polku Igoreve’s Russian translation. We think that it is not possible to study Zabolockij’s production without a critical edition of all his poems, and this article gives materials for a a critical edition of Stolbcy to start with.
