Tutti i luoghi fisici realizzati per rispondere ai bisogni di salute dell’uomo, ritenuti immutabili e duraturi, subiscono nel tempo continui processi di riqualificazione e/o di trasformazione. L’ospedale è la struttura esemplare della contraddizione tra evoluzione dei bisogni di salute di un individuo, progresso scientifico e processi socio-culturali. Il testo sintetizza i risultati di una ricerca conto terzi tra la Fondazione Banca Nazionale delle Comunicazioni e il Dipartimento ITACA. L’obiettivo del testo è fornire un aiuto, sia culturale che tecnico, ai programmatori per la realizzazione di un sistema-ospedale che affronti i reali bisogni di una popolazione in quel determinato territorio e ai progettisti di strutture ospedaliere affinché siano tenuti in debita considerazione tre aspetti interdipendenti: l'umanizzazione dell'ambiente ospedaliero, l'innovazione scientifico-tecnologica sia dei materiali e dei sistemi costruttivi che delle apparecchiature medicali e delle biotecnologie.
