The chapter offers some observations on the relationship between the three variables of population, production and rate of urbanization in the Roman world, resorting to comparative material in addition. In particular, with reference to Italy and to other regions of the Empire, it is asked to what extent it is legitimate to consider the increase in the rate of urbanisation as a proxy for population increase – and therefore for extensive growth – and a proxy for intensive growth.

Abstract
The chapter offers some observations on the relationship between the three variables of population, production and rate of urbanization in the Roman world, resorting to comparative material in addition. In particular, with reference to Italy and to other regions of the Empire, it is asked to what extent it is legitimate to consider the increase in the rate of urbanisation as a proxy for population increase – and therefore for extensive growth – and a proxy for intensive growth.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
