Abstract

The ninteenth century criticism nourished a certain scepticism towards the literary quality of the romantic theatre and the validity of the recent attempts to revaluate it. The “closet drama”, was considered the only form available to the authors because the quarter of nobility remaining in the tragedy wasn’t enough to give dignity to an evening in theatre based for three quarters on burletta, farse and pantomime. The recent critical interest for the theatrical romantic phenomenon points out the conflict between an avanguard focused on the inner part of the character (on his “secret closet” as J. Baillie defines it) and a theatre which, at the dawn of the industrial capitalism, was interested to keep on with the industry of the show, unavoidably linked to the idea of entertaining. A conflict which, far from producing a “deserted stage”, urged the romantic poets to a deeply felt but passionate relationship with the stage and with the extraordinary moment that the different forms of performance were living.
