"A comparative historiographic reflection on sovereignity in early modern Europe: interregnum and papal funerals"

The rites of interregnum were a major topic of historical debate (and anthropological) on the crux of the transfer of power from a sovereign (or head) to another. In this paper we approach the study of the papal funeral from a dual perspective. On the one hand within the specificity and uniqueness of the papal sovereignty than any other prince elective sovereign, the pope is buried while you prepare the election of his successor, his blood family after his death inevitably undergoes a process of downgrade inevitable. This discontinuity is expressed in the forms of the ritual involving the mourning of a collective actor, the Board, the vehicle of the continuity of the body-the Church. At the same time many aspects of the papal make it comparable to those of other rulers: the use of a shared vocabulary of sovereignty that is expressed in the funeral orations, the typology and decoration of biers, the iconography of funerary monuments.

I riti di interregno sono stati un grande tema del dibattito storiografico (e anche antropologico) sul nodo cruciale del passaggio del potere da un sovrano (o capo) ad un altro. In questo saggio affrontiamo lo studio dei funerali papali da una duplice prospettiva. Da un lato all’interno della specificità e unicità della sovranità papale rispetto a quella di qualsiasi altro principe: sovrano elettivo il papa viene sepolto mentre si prepara l’elezione del suo successore, la sua famiglia di sangue alla sua morte subisce ineluttabilmente un processo di declassamento ineluttabile. Questa discontinuità si esprime nelle forme del rito che prevedono il lutto di un attore collettivo il Collegio, il veicolo della continuità del corpo-Chiesa. Allo stesso tempo molteplici aspetti rendono comparabili papali a quelli degli altri sovrani: l’uso di un lessico condiviso della sovranità che si esprime nelle orazioni funebri, nella tipologia e nelle decorazioni dei catafalchi, l’iconografia dei monumenti funerari.
