French has been spoken in Senegal for three centuries. Little by little in the 17th century, it started to replace Dutch, English, and Portuguese, and it began to be heard in the trading posts of Saint-Louis, Gorée Island and the Cap-Vert peninsula. Elements of the history of French in Senegal help to explain all at once features shared with other francophone countries of Africa, and attachment to the norm, but also the variation of individual speakers sharing the same native language and language of everyday use. The first PFC survey in Senegal focuses on wolophone speakers in Dakar. A description of the linguistic situation of Senegal will allow us to justify our choice of the Wolofs.
