This article describes the scientific method used to gather and analyse data during the survey of the Coliseum. The following aspects regarding data collection were examined: the design and creation of an ad hoc system of datum points and topographical targets which limited inaccuracies to a maximum of one centimetre; the algorithm and software necessary for a strict compensation of the reference grid; the mixed procedure used to control error during the measuring campaign (free station); the procedure used to document the detail points and lastly, the procedure used to integrate the data provided by the instrumental survey. Regarding data analysis, a description is provided of the best fitting procedures permitting the calculation of the equations of the axes and alignments of the main structures as well as the difference between the experimental data and the theoretical curves, ellipses and circle arches. Furthermore, the article illustrates how the problem of the amphitheatre's shape, either oval or elliptical, cannot be solved by observation alone. It has to be considered in conjunction with ancient sources and, above all, with the drawing techniques available at the time. One of the sources examined is the writings of gromatici veteres and how the construction of the varatio fluminis described by Marcus Junius Nipsus permits the construction of any curve, especially of an ellipse or circle, by using simple alignment or crosshead procedures.
