In this paper I will discuss the role of the Old Church Slavonic textual connector že (‘Ø, and, but’) in the structuring of discourse. The hypothesis that considers it an adversative/additive conjunction, established in the practice of lexicographers and grammarians, will be rejected and it will be shown that že is best defined as a development marker, since its core function is to signal the interruption of a preceding thematic chain and the beginning of a new one. Particular attention will be devoted to the mismatches between the Old Church Slavonic translation of the Gospel and its Greek Vorlage.

Abstract

In this paper I will discuss the role of the Old Church Slavonic textual connector že (‘Ø, and, but’) in the structuring of discourse. The hypothesis that considers it an adversative/additive conjunction, established in the practice of lexicographers and grammarians, will be rejected and it will be shown that že is best defined as a development marker, since its core function is to signal the interruption of a preceding thematic chain and the beginning of a new one. Particular attention will be devoted to the mismatches between the Old Church Slavonic translation of the Gospel and its Greek Vorlage.
