Abstract

Ancient peoples attached great importance to offspring and loved their children; however, they negatively valued childhood, imputing ignorance, lack of reasoning, inability to self-control, and, above all, incompleteness. The early Christianity, born in the Semitic environment and soon spread in the Greco-Roman world, substantially shared the current opinion. However, the memory of Jesus surrounded by children, feasts in honor of little martyrs, and preaching more and more interested in the salvific value of the infantia Christi suggested a different consideration for the early age. This age now began to be appreciated for its specific peculiarities. The volume traces the process, sometimes tortuous, that led childhood and holiness to meet, proposing a journey through history, literature, behavior, and iconography
