The study of diplomatic correspondence reveals that the perception of a country is often affected by stereotypes. Analyzing the documents of French Ambassador Gilles Martinet and the notes of the Quai d’Orsay, this essay intends to highlight some recurring images on Italian diplomacy, trying to demonstrate how diplomacy is sometimes a vehicle for spreading stereotypes rather than an instrument to tackle them.
