Introduction. Several authors have studied the link between built environment and physical activity, defining specific walkability indices (WI). These tools are mainly based on archival data sets, analyzed with GIS, which do not consider the environmental quality of the context. T-WSI is an easy method to evaluate the walkability base on direct observation. Aim of the study is to evaluate the inequalities in urban walkability in three urban neighborhoods of the city of Rome, in order to support Public Administrations in the decision making related to urban health policy and local development. Methods. The tool, called the Walking Suitability Index of the territory (T-WSI), is used. T-WSI is applied to each street of a neighborhood. It includes 12 indicators subdivided into 4 categories: practicability, safety, urbanity, pleasurableness. Data collected in each street are inserted in an algoritm to perform weighted sums and to aggregate the indicators and the categories, in which the length of each street is also considered up to compute the final index in a scale 0-100. In this study T-WSI is evaluated in three neighborhoods of Rome: “San Saba”, “Sacco Pastore” and “Tufello-Val Melaina”, which different in socio-economic conditions. Results. The final weighted scores are: 56.9 for San Saba, 53.6 for Sacco Pastore and 44.1 for Tufello-Val Melaina. Although all neighborhoods show gaps in the design for pedestrian use of public spaces, inequalities results from the study, with relevant differences in all categories; in general safety obtained the worst results. Conclusions. The study underlines differences in terms of walkability among neighborhoods. T-WSI could be good support for decisions making of local health authorities and policy-makers. In particular it could be usefull for the development of regeneration projects for degraded areas of the cities.

Abstract

Conclusions. The study underlines differences in terms of walkability among neighborhoods. T-WSI could be good support for decisions making of local health authorities and policy-makers. In particular it could be usefull for the development of regeneration projects for degraded areas of the cities.
