This chapter examines the idiosyncratic funerary epigraphy of Cyrene, contextualizing the spectrum of written and iconographic communication which commemorates the deceased population of the territory from the Hellenistic period to late antiquity. Exploring the painted and charcoal inscriptions will afford opportunities to determine an epigraphic typology of funerary texts and images, the potential for formulating a paleography of such inscriptions, and a much clearer understanding of the manner in which social identity was transmitted in the Cyrenean territory.

Abstract

This chapter examines the idiosyncratic funerary epigraphy of Cyrene, contextualizing the spectrum of written and iconographic communication which commemorates the deceased population of the territory from the Hellenistic period to late antiquity. Exploring the painted and charcoal inscriptions will afford opportunities to determine an epigraphic typology of funerary texts and images, the potential for formulating a paleography of such inscriptions, and a much clearer understanding of the manner in which social identity was transmitted in the Cyrenean territory.
