The aim of this paper is to outline a theory of language and communication in La Mettrie’s philosophical works, drawing from his ideas on the origin of language, on animal language and communication, and on the relation between language and intelligence. I will point out that La Mettrie’s characteristic view of the connection between innate dispositions and empirical acquisition is the focus of his naturalistic idea on the origins of language and of higher intellectual abilities.
