Architecture and Sustainable Rural Development in Delta Region in Egypt: A Review

Egyptian rural villages suffer many problems at environmental, economic, urban and social levels. Architecture considers as a reflective mirror to these factors, in this context many studies showed that architectural pattern in rural settlements in Delta Region in Northern Egypt doesn't respect the environment. Thus, this essay is an attempt to show the potential of achieving sustainble development through architecture in Delta Region in Egypt. To achieve that, in the following paragraphs Sustainble Development definition and emerging motivation and its relationship with architecture will be clarified, then to focus on the Egyptian context, the reciprocal relationship between housing and development process through ages will be identified. Also, the potential of using renewable energy in Delta Region will be clarified. Results showed a road map towards the possibility of achieving Sustainble Development in rural settlements in Egypt.
