Abstract The sense of place means that people's mental perception of the environment and their feelings are more or less conscious of the surrounding environment in such a way that one's understanding and emotion are linked to the semantic context of the environment. Most urban spaces today are not tailored to the needs of the people, and urban spaces are transformed into either commercial or transit hubs or spaces with mere connectivity. The lack of social life flow in public spaces has separated the flow of people from the environment as well as from each other resulting confusion for people due to the lack of hierarchy in design and readability in public spaces, especially urban squares. The present study investigates the impact of physical factors on sense of place and in order to identify and formulate the physical characteristics that underlie sense of place in urban identity squares. Given the principles of creating a sense of place and establishing a dynamic relationship between the physical, functional and semantic dimensions of the senses, the need to provide a context for the activity of all strata in dysfunctional tissues, led us to investigate this issue in Isfahan 3 district area. Therefore, Antique Square in Isfahan District 3 was chosen as the sample study. In this study, first, the concept of sense of place from different perspectives is presented and then expresses its shaping factors and finally by identifying ten key indicators, a model offers an analysis to illustrate the effect of these factors on inducing a sense of place. The results show that physical factors are effective in shaping the sense of place and level of the environment: at the first level, the characteristics of the physical environment by facilitating activities according to people's behavioral patterns and meeting the needs of the users of the place, provide a satisfying environment and allow for the creation of a sense of place. At the second level, the elements of the environment are derived from individuals' mental images and their perceptions of the environment and through the balance between form and function, provide anatomical distinction, readability and semantic association, intuitive mediators of mental communication between users of the place
