Abstract

Solar shading systems play an important role in energy, light and acoustic matters. They works toghether with the envelope as components for energy mediation between inside and outside the building and fulfill the performance that transparent surfaces alone would have difficulty in guaranteeing. Moreover these systems are essential in the qualitative perception of architecture, their appearance and their relationship with the opaque surfaces determin in fact the composition of the façade. The presence of an external shield, fixed or movable, compared to its absence can greatly improve the performance of the building envelope; in particular the movable systems contribute more efficiently than fixed ones. The design experiences refer to different types and materials of solar shading systems; the movable clay solar shades offers, especially in the European context, the possibility of returning not only low energy contemporary solutions but whose material and visual continuity is consistent with the pre-existing architecture. The project for the extension of the Museum of Ceramic Art in Clay, Denmark, on the island of Fyn, is a representative architecture of the application of movable clay solar shading systems, designed by Danish architects Kjaer and Richter and built in 2015.
