The essay seeks to problematize current understandings of Zambian nationalism by taking a fresh look at the activities of Harry Nkumbula, the president of the African National Congress, in the 1950s. The chapter provides a new reading of the process of resulted in Nkumbula's transformation from "father of Zambian nationalism" to vilified leader of an increasingly regionalized minority party.
