TUMORS PANORAMA IN TANGUIETA ZONE HOSPITAL OF SAINT JEAN DE DIEU IN BENIN

Background: Generally, tumors are a major health problem and cancers are the most feared. The absence of cancer registry in Benin makes it difficult to assess the extent of the cancer on the population. Aim: To describe the epidemiology of tumors at Saint Jean de Dieu Hospital of Tanguiéta. Materials and methods: A descriptive and retrospective study from january 1st 2014 to 31 december 2015 in Zone Hospital of St. Jean of Dieu Tanguiéta were done. Were included patients admitted to tumor confirmed by an anatomo-pathological examination. Data were collected from the Logihosp software and patients medical records. Results: In 2014, tumors accounted for 1.9% of admissions (282 cases including 124 benign and malignant 158); in 2015 they accounted for 2.0% (290 cases including 110 benign and 180 malignant). The average age of patients with benign tumor was 39.6 ± 12.4 years old, ranging from 7 days to 85 years old. For malignant tumors, the mean age of patients was 40.7 ± 20.8 years, ranging 6 months and 95 years olsd. The most common cancers were the liver (33 cases) and cervical (27 cases); the most frequent site of benign tumors was the uterus (159 cases). Intra-hospital mortality was 0.9% for benign tumors and 8.3% for malignant tumors. Conclusion: The incidence of tumors is underestimated and cancers have high mortality account held therapeutic limitations and multiple causes of delays.
