La presunta tolleranza religiosa romana in epoca repubblicana

This research is centred on the supposed “religious toleration” in the Roman Republican era in its relationship both with society and political institutions. The “literature of the area”, for the most part, admits that Roman polytheism was open to new religious influences: everyone could believe in what he preferred, as long as this would not involve disruption of public order. In this light, however, it is interesting to note that the choice towards “other religions” (in example, you can think to the cults in honor of Bacchus) was not, exclusively, of the peregrini, but also the cives romani, ready – maybe – to assume those stimuli which not always the official Roman cult seemed to offer. My conclusion is that this was not a real pluralism, at least in the usual meaning we give to the term.

Questa ricerca intende problematizzare la presunta “tolleranza religiosa” romana in epoca repubblicana nelle sue imprescindibili relazioni con la società e le istituzioni politiche. La “letteratura di area” è, per lo più, concorde nel ritenere il politeismo romano aperto ai nuovi influssi religiosi: ognuno poteva credere in quel che voleva, a patto che ciò non inducesse al sovvertimento dell’ordine pubblico. In quest’ottica è, peraltro, interessante osservare come la scelta di professare religioni “altre” (si pensi, ad esempio, ai culti in onore di Bacco) non fosse operata, esclusivamente, dai peregrini, ma anche dagli stessi cives romani, pronti – forse – a raccogliere quegli stimoli che non sempre il culto ufficiale sembrava in grado di offrire. Fu vero “pluralismo”? Secondo la mia opinione, non si trattò di “pluralismo”: non nel senso che noi, oggi, attribuiamo al termine.
