The paper analyzes the Linear B documents from the Knossos dealing with the Festos (pa-i-to) during Mycenaean times. The survey is aimed at defining the economic, political and strategic importance of Festos within the kingdom of Knossos. The analysis of the tablets dealing with agriculture allows us to infer that the area of the territory of Festos directly controlled by the palace was not very extensive. However, the analysis of the tablets pertaining to the sheep-husbandry testify a very different picture. The comparison with the phenomenon of transhumance in Western Messarà before World War II, testifies that the transhumant mobility of the local flocks interested an area of at least 500km2, from Mount Ida to the north, to the Asterousia mountains, to the south of Festos. Applying this model to Mycenaean times, and considering that Festos is only the most important toponym of an administrative region that included at least another 3/4 important centres (for a total of about 13,000 animals), it is reasonable to suppose that the territorial control exercised by the palace of Knossos had to be strong in this important region of Crete, in order to ensure the safety of its flocks and of their strategic resources.

Abstract
Applying this model to Mycenaean times, and considering that Festos is only the most important toponym of an administrative region that included at least another 3/4 important centres (for a total of about 13,000 animals), it is reasonable to suppose that the territorial control exercised by the palace of Knossos had to be strong in this important region of Crete, in order to ensure the safety of its flocks and of their strategic resources.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
