The objectives of the project are two : firstly, to allow Internet users a virtual jour- ney through the World Map realized by Matteo Ricci in 1602 and its trans- lation into Italian accomplished by the Jesuit Sinologist Pasquale D’Elia; secondly, to provide the instruments for the linguistic and conceptual study of the cartouches contained in the World Map. In the context of this second objective, a bilingual Chinese-Italian termino-ontological resource is being developed. In this resource the lexical level was modeled according to the lemon model, extended to represent specific characteristics of the classical Chinese language. The conceptual part, on the other hand, has received an ontological formalization in OWL.

Abstract

This article aims to illustrate the first results obtained in the framework of the project “Todo el mundo es nuestra casa”. The World is Our Home. A Virtual Journey Around the World Atlas by Matteo Ricci, SJ (1602).
