The current tendency, both nationally and internationally, sees the Material Libraries go from a place of information and hyper choice (Manzini, 1986), to ‘concrete’ places where experimental processes and applied research can be activated, thanks to the openness towards the always more interdisciplinary collaboration processes in planning. This way, real material design workshops are set up and they will not only represent a space for divulgation and promotion of the new materials, but they will also be actual spaces to create, plan, design the product innovation, that is an “open” space where it is even possible to imagine new materials. It is therefore the designer’s role to be modified - he will then be an actual part of the very material planning - and the planning methodology - based on always more opened processes (open space technology for instance) - but also the same physical space, made flexible and functional for coworking. And that’s how the Material Libraries turn into actual laboratories for research and experimentation. The ways of projecting materials change, communication / exhibition / display / divulgation of the outcomes of the co-participated experimentation evolve and the ‘making’ spaces (open design spaces), opened to students, professionals, researchers, teachers and visitors becomes a hybrid. ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome has started a HUB called SAP.E.RI & CO Enhances Research Innovation & Coworking for this purpose. Inside this HUB there will be a space dedicated to the experimentation of these new ways of “open” spaces-methodologies-design process, where the paper wants to report the progress stages of the experimentation. It was started on one hand through a first phase of didactic analysis and experimentation, finalized to the examination of new ways of setting up, able to create new kinds of interaction with the material and allowing at the same time a new exhibiting/designing trend to be conceived as an instrument of knowledge and research; it started through the construction of a methodology and a specific language “design oriented” shared among numerous disciplines and actualized in the didactic and research domain of the MaterialdesignLab (MdL) of Sapienza University of Rome. In the last part, there are spatial configurations with small exhibition structures that take as an example MdL exhibition spaces in national and international.
