Abstract

On the one hand, the last initiatives of EU about the creation of a form of regulation related to the online diffusion of fake-news and, on the other hand, the attack of the President of United States Donald Trump towards the American media system, pay a new attention about the importance of the information source in the global public debate. The modern society is based on an informative scenario where is possible to trace a new concept of post-truth. Now, the truth became a subject of negotiation between media and citizens. In particular, the narration of political events – as the recent English referendum for leaving Europe known as “Brexit” – were characterised by a large diffusion of fake news. This situation has led into public debate two themes: i, the uncontrollability of information online and the grassroots production of information; ii, the difficulties and the transformations linked to a raising disintermediated journalism. Therefore, activities ad hoc have been prevalent to contrast this phenomenon in two different perspectives: monitoring and managing the phenomenon promptly and, consequently, to prevent the diffusion of opinions based on inaccurate and false information. At this regard, two of the most important world online companies had start to move in the same direction: Google and Facebook had introduced a new option putting a tag on the news considered false individuating by fact-checking industry experts. For these reasons, the goal of the paper is to analyse the most famous Italian website of fact-checking “Pagella Politica” and, in particular, its valuation processes of the news relating to the political statements of the three most important leaders of Five Stars Movement: Beppe Grillo, the movement founder, Luigi Di Maio, actually vice-president of Italian Parliament in Rome, and Alessandro Di Battista, member of Parliament.
